The number refers to the width of the groove in the handrail and baserail, and therefore the width of spindle that fits it. A 41mm system takes 41mm spindles; a 32mm system takes 32mm.
They are not interchangeable. Mixing them leaves spindles loose in the groove or too wide to seat. Check an existing rail before ordering, and match fillets to the same size.
