Measure the clear distance between the two newel posts — not the length of the flight. That clear run is what the spindle spacing is calculated from.
Building regulations require that a 100mm sphere cannot pass through any gap. With n spindles of width w across a clear run L there are n + 1 gaps, each of (L − n·w) / (n + 1). Our stair builder does this for you.
